SPECIFICS

A project targeting the brief ‘Alone Together’ by the RSA awards.

Focusing on Mental Health and Social Isolation

Problem

The main issue with the brief, was the mental health rate in the construction industry. For years, it has been overlooked, and only now are the public noticing its struggles; due to mental health, statistics have shown profit loss and lack of motivation on site, costing the industry billions.

Process

Starting off with the general public, a survey noted that roughly 75% struggle with anxiety, and 41% depression. Holding both group and independent interviews with site workers, it was noted of the actions taken on themselves, that the issue to speak out isn’t so simple. Identifying humour and 1-1 chats, were the most common insights taken from this research. Designing based on modular systems (blocks) will enable a clear and genuine structure for the solution.

Solution

A portacabin structure will be the most suitable form of design for the project. The solution will be placed on site where accessible to builders and site employees. Should it aim to help deal with internal struggles as a way to take a short break from reality.
